Centennial Fanfare, for brass quintet
by Kim Scharnberg
$15
Commissioned in 2006 for the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival in celebration of 100 years of the Music Shed.
"I'm fortunate to call the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut – the northwest corner of the state sometimes referred to as 'the southern Berkshires' – my home. My family and I moved here in 2002 and I was only slightly aware of something called the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival. That first summer I wandered over the hill from our house only to discover this incredible, HUGE one-season concert hall!
Seating 900+ it was built in 1906 using redwood and cedar imported from California to host large choral groups. The New York Philharmonic would perform there and many notable composers, including Rachmaninov, Sibelius, Vaughn Williams would visit. The hall later became the summer home of the Yale School of Music.
Fast forward 100 years, 'the Shed' holds a meaningful and musical place in my heart and career. I'm honored to have had several pieces performed there as well as organizing a benefit concert for the ongoing restoration." - Kim Scharnberg
