Continuum, for horn octet

by John Dupuis

$31
“Continuum” was commissioned by the University of Central Florida French Horn Ensemble for their 2024 performance at the Southeast Horn Workshop, under the direction of Dr. Benjamin Lieser, Professor and Conductor. The composition blends minimalist elements with engaging melodic and harmonic textures. It begins with a persistent eight-note ostinato that establishes the rhythmic foundation of the piece. This initial section introduces pulsing interruptions that evolve and culminate in a striking open fifth chord. Following this, a brief fanfare revisits and elaborates on themes from the first section. The middle portion of the piece explores extended harmonies and monorhythmic expressions, drawing from harmonic material introduced earlier. The final section revisits the themes from the opening, building to a dramatic climax with complex dissonances that ultimately resolve into consonance in the concluding moments.
