Dreams, Yearning, for horn and piano

Dreams, Yearning emerged almost of its own volition during my sophomore year of college. Barely six weeks into my freshman year, my family was struck by tragedy with the unexpected death of my older brother Andy. A year later as I was trying to write a piece for horn and piano, this tragedy was still all too fresh in my heart and mind. During that time (and for many years after), I would often have dreams about my brother - usually happy and joyful ones - only to experience the painful (re-)realization that he was gone upon waking up. This complex and somewhat bewildering mixture of dream-induced emotions - joy, grief, longing, anguish, love, yearning - deeply permeated the composition and trajectory of this piece. It is my attempt to explore the complex, contradictory, and bittersweet experiences of dreaming about beloved people and places, awakening to the reality that they’re gone, and finding a way to move forward with life (if not necessarily moving on).
Dreams, Yearning was commissioned by Thomas Bacon during the summer of 2006, and was completed in early February 2007. Mr. Bacon, with pianist Patricia Higdon, gave the premiere performance of it at the Mid-South Horn Conference held at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, on March 25, 2007.
