John Dupuis

Mr. John Dupuis currently serves as the K-12 Curriculum Specialist for Performing Arts with Volusia County Schools, Florida, overseeing 80+ school music, dance and theatre programs. Since becoming Volusia’s Performing Arts Specialist, Mr. Dupuis has enhanced and developed the district Music, Dance, and Theatre Curricula, focusing on a strong standards-based Sequential Learning Succession K-12. He has also created and developed the Volusia ArtsPartners program, consisting of local companies and organizations with a dedication to Volusia’s performing arts students. He has also brought in over $120,000 in donated instruments from groups like Kids Rock the Nation, and utilized Title I, Title II, and Title IV funds to provide over two million dollars in instruments, equipment, resources, and professional development for our district’s performing arts teachers. In addition to curriculum responsibilities, Mr. Dupuis also oversees all six All-County Showcase concerts, plans and coordinates professional development opportunities for teachers, oversees district instrument and equipment purchases, and coordinates the new teacher program and the new teacher mentor program. Mr. Dupuis was also instrumental in obtaining funding for a Fine Arts Resource Teacher position, the first of its kind in Volusia County.
Prior to his appointment as Performing Arts Specialist, Mr. Dupuis was the Director of Bands and Orchestras at Spruce Creek High School, where he taught courses in Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, AP Music Theory, and Marching Band. In addition, he is past Conductor of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra in Orlando (7 years), past Conductor of the Sarasota Orchestra Youth Symphony (2 years) and the Summer at the Symphony Music Program, and for six years was the Director of Bands at Howard W. Blake Performing Arts High School in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Dupuis received his Bachelor’s degrees in Music Education and Music Composition and his Master of Music degree in Conducting, Music Education and Music Composition from the University of South Florida. Ensembles under his direction have performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and Southwark Cathedral in London, as well as venues in Ireland, England, Germany, France, Chicago, Orlando, Tampa, and Washington D.C. His ensembles have consistently received superior ratings, including numerous ‘straight superior’ ratings at the state level, earning his bands the prestigious Otto J. Kraushaar award for straight superior ratings at all district and state events. In Chicago, his Wind Ensemble earned the title of ‘Grand Champion’ of the Chicago National Wind Band Invitational and his 220 member marching band earned the title of ‘Grand Champion’ of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. Mr. Dupuis is an active composer and arranger, with works being commissioned and performed by various ensembles throughout the United States, including the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, The Brevard Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sarasota Orchestra, the Venice Symphony, the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies, Texas Tech University, Radford University, VanderCook College, New Mexico State University, the University of Central Florida, the Southern Winds, and others. His concert band and marching band compositions/arrangements have been performed by numerous college and high school bands throughout the United States. His music has also been featured at Universal Studios’ “Islands of Adventure”. Mr. Dupuis’ works are published through Wingert Jones Publications, Barnhouse Music Publications, and Wehr’s Music House Publishers. Mr. Dupuis is a proud member of FBA, FOA, FVA, FMEA, MENC, NAfME, ASCAP, the Conductor’s Guild, the League of American Orchestras, serves on the boards of the Volusia County Cultural Alliance and Kid’s Rock the Nation, and is a member of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s Education Committee. |
