2)The Purpose - A Brief Sojourn
3)The Return - Thunderin' Home

Commissioned by Courtois Trombones and the Penn State School of Music

Written in 2010 to feature the virtuosic and beautiful playing of my friend, colleague, and longtime Penn State faculty member, Mark Lusk.  It premiered with the Penn State Orchestra and was later performed with the US Army Orchestra at the American Trombone Workshop.

A tour de force featuring multiple instruments, the first movement showcases the orchestral tenor trombone.

The second movement is a reflective moment for a small bore jazz trombone that is intertwined with a soprano vocalise melody.  The quote for this movement reads Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people. - Albert Einstein

Bass trombone is the star of the third movement with a groove that won't quit.

In 2019 I was asked to create two reductions of Journey, one with solo piano and a second for two pianos and percussion/drum set, for the Cleveland Trombone Seminar.

In the original program notes Mark Lusk writes:

“I had asked Kim for a piece that featured the various types of trombones; with a first movement that was "orchestral/American/Copland-like" in nature to feature the large-bore tenor trombone, we talked about a ballade-like song for the second movement that would show off the lyrical smaller tenor trombone, and finally after a short solo soliloquy it would transition into a rockin' last moment that would showcase the bass trombone. What he delivered was a remarkable piece of music that deserves to be heard by any serious trombonist /musician.”
