Thomas Jöstlein

Thomas Jöstlein, associate Principal Horn of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra since 2010, is also a devoted alphornist and composer.
He was assistant Professor of Horn at the University of Illinois, taught several times at Indiana University, and has held positions at St. Louis University, the University of Hawaii and at Virginia Commonwealth University. His mentors - Arnold Jacobs, Roger Rocco, Hermann Baumann and Philip Farkas - stressed the importance of singing on the horn. As a performer, Thomas has held several orchestral positions, including as the New York Philharmonic's assistant Principal Horn under Lorin Maazel, and participated in their historic live broadcast from North Korea (2008). In 2019, Thomas toured China, Taiwan, and Japan with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and pianist Nobu Tsujii, recording the Ravel G-Major and Beethoven second concerti for Deutsche Grammophon. In 2024, he was the principal horn in the first performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony in the Dominican Republic, under José Molina. He appears on Tony Bennett’s Duets II album along with his sister, Barbara Jöstlein Currie, Fourth Horn of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. A prolific arranger and composer, he has been published by by Köbl Edition (Munich), Faust Music, Cimmaron Music Press, Trevco, Cherry Classics, including his horn duo versions of the Brahms symphonies, and is now proud to join the WaveFront Music family. |
