The Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248 was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1734 during his time in Leipzig, and premiered between December 25, 1734 and January 6, 1735. The original work consists of six parts to be performed throughout the Christmas season, beginning on Christmas Day and concluding on Epiphany. This arrangement is the final chorus of the sixth part, the concluding movement of the oratorio. It is scored for double brass quintet and maintains the original key. The two piccolo trumpets and first C trumpet parts are Bach’s trumpet parts. The fourth trumpet, horns, and trombones comprise the oboes and strings, while the tubas are the continuo and timpani. The highlighted chorale melody is found in the low brass parts and should be performed in a vocal style.
