Intrada for Joey was commissioned in 2021 by Amy Laursen and Todd Cranson for their horn and tuba duo. They requested a “concert opener” that would be an inviting and energized work with which to begin programs. The music invites the listener into a concert experience through two different main ideas: fanfare-like jumps of a perfect fourth, and a sillier, fun tune. True to the composer’s style, the instruments frequently trade-off between melody and counterpoint. After hearing the initial draft, Amy and Todd remarked that it reminded them of their fun-loving dog, Joey, and requested that the piece be named in his honor.
