Waltztumble, for brass quintet
by Christopher Gable
$17
Waltztumble was commissioned by the International Music Camp for the International Brass Quintet in 2019. The title is a combination of “Waltz” and “Stumble”, which is what I would imagine would happen if people tried to dance to some parts of this piece. It was fun to write something “inside the box.” The individual melodies and harmonies are pretty traditional, but the way they interact with each other is not. An argument ensues in the B section, as to what kind of B section the group wants to play. As we navigate our way through this fractious 21st century, my hope is that we can all find a way to listen to one another, try to see things from the other’s perspective, and work things out, as this quintet demonstrates.
