Ian Zook

Ian Zook is an active orchestral and solo performer who has appeared in concerts throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. An Associate Professor at James Madison University, he performs frequently with the Bluestone Winds and Madison Brass, both faculty ensembles in-residence. As soloist he has performed with numerous ensembles including the Staunton Music Festival, the Virginia Baroque Consort, the Chamber Orchestra of Charlottesville, and the JMU Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Percussion Ensemble, Madison Singers, and Brass Band at the Kennedy Center.
Mr. Zook's orchestral experience is extensive and has included positions with the Princeton and Haddonfield Symphony Orchestras, and frequent performances as a substitute musician with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Pennsylvania Ballet, the Philadelphia Opera, as well as the National Symphony Orchestra and the Harrisburg, Richmond, Roanoke, Delaware, and Vermont Symphonies. He has performed under many of the world's premiere conductors including Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Valery Gergiev, Charles Dutoit, Neemi Järvi, Michael Tilson Thomas, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos, Osmo Vänskä, David Zinman, Leonard Slatkin, Zubin Mehta, and Manfred Honeck. He has also presented numerous solo performances and lectures at an array of universities, including the Curtis Institute of Music, Peabody Conservatory, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Penn State University, the University of Michigan, and numerous others. A frequent performer and adjudicator at the annual South East and North East Horn Workshops of the International Horn Society, he has also performed and presented during the International Horn Symposiums in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Also versatile on period instruments, Zook has performed with the New York Collegium, Washington Back Consort, and the Staunton Music Festival on both natural and baroque horn. He was a featured performer on trompe de chasse during the 2005 Northeast Horn Workshop, and sounds his handmade Walter Bachmann Swiss alphorn as frequently as possible. Mr. Zook holds degrees from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill and the University of Michigan and attended the Verbier Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival, National Orchestral Institute, Sarasota Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. |
