Night Music, for two horns and piano

Night Music explores the sonic capabilities of dark modal harmonies in the piano and echoing close voicing proximity in the horn parts. The ambiguity created by this texture is lead onward with a recurring rhythmic motif. The echoing theme in the horns is finally transformed into a bold chorale before the piece draws to a reflective close.
The piece was commissioned by hornists Brett Hodge, husband of Marina Krol Hodge, and Adam Wolf to be premiered at the 2022 Southwest Horn Workshop at the University of the Redlands. DEDICATION Night Music was commissioned by hornists Brett Hodge, husband of Marina Krol Hodge, and Adam Wolf in dedication to Marina Krol Hodge (1994-2022), “a duet partner, friend, and wife. Gone too soon, but forever guiding us in heavenly harmony.” The composition was premiered by Brett Hodge, Adam Wolf, and pianist Anna Yukho as the final piece on the closing concert at the 2022 Southwest Horn Workshop at University of Redlands on October 2nd, 2022. |
