Rhapsody, for oboe, horn, and piano
by Matthew Haislip
$21
Rhapsody was written in 2018 for Jessica Haislip by her adoring husband, Matthew, who was inspired to compose a trio to play together after they had performed the Piano, Oboe and Horn Trio, Op. 188 by Carl Reinecke. With the piano setting the backdrop for lyrical and animated modal figures, Rhapsody explores the sonic possibilities of this instrumentation by musically depicting the differences between his wife (the oboe, elegant and introverted) and him (the horn, intense and extroverted). The contrasting themes are ultimately brought together in transformation at the end. The piece was premiered by the Haislip Duo and pianist Richard Seiler in recital at the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2018.
